Villarreal CF is a La Liga football club which is based in Vila-real. They are affectionately called “Yellow Submarine” because of their yellow home kit and because of the fact that despite being a low profile team, they’ve given a tough time to the big teams of Spain like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Valencia, in the title race.
Villarreal was founded on 10th March 1923 and it is surprising to believe that a club which is currently regarded as star club of Spain made its Primera Liga debut in 1998 and their journey of the La Liga was far from glorious. They were relegated the very next year but they fought hard for their place in the la Liga and were promoted the very next year when they finished third in the Segunda Division. After their return to the la Liga, they managed to survive by coming 15th for two successive seasons. In 2002-2003, they managed to reach the final of the Intertoto Cup where they were defeated by Malaga CF but it is not so easy to keep Villarreal down for long. They came back in the next year and won the Intertoto by defeating Heerenveen. In the UEFA Cup, Villarreal CF performed really well and reached the semi finals where they were defeated by the Spanish giants Valencia. Real Madrid topped the league and this meant that Villarreal finished above clubs like Barcelona and Valencia. Villarreal CF came on the 4th position last season and qualified for the Champions League again. They are struggling in the current season though where they are currently at the 12th position in the league and are winless in the Champions League.
